Overview
For over 50 years IOM have been at the forefront of research to understand and mitigate a wide range of occupational and environmental health risks. Our aim is to improve people’s safety and wellbeing in all aspects of their life.

The Role
We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our research team. The successful candidate will help our team turn data into evidence to improve understanding of, and solutions to, challenges in workplace and environmental health and well-being. You will work on existing commercial and research projects whilst also developing new proposals for future work. This role brings with it the opportunity to collaborate and work across the wider organisation. Some of the work you will be involved in or responsible for are as follows:

  • Contributing to and supporting a wide range of research and consultancy projects
  • Synthesise and organise existing and novel environmental exposure and health datasets
  • Carry out and support data cleaning, processing and quality assurance
  • Support and undertake epidemiological and other quantitative analysis
  • Provide expertise in the analysis of human exposure data and relevant contextual data in workplace, laboratory or other environments
  • Develop models for detecting patterns within big data sets and present it in a captivating way
  • Able to interpret and present findings from a variety of human exposure data (including from sensors and surveys) using novel data visualisation methods
  • Support and collaborate on proposal development for a range of research and consultancy clients
  • Contributing to articles for peer-reviewed publication
  • Assist with literature reviews related to a broad range of exposure and health topics
  • Supporting the team to further develop our services in exposure science, consultancy and training for the future

Your Skills
As a Data Scientist, we think you’d be a great fit if:

  • You have a minimum of a Masters in statistics, epidemiology, or informatics, preferably with either a health or environmental focus with at least 1 years’ experience
  • Ability to develop study designs and data analysis plans
  • You have expertise, or practical knowledge, in spatial and temporal modelling with respect to environmental risks, particularly air pollution, and links to health outcomes.
  • Experience with advanced epidemiological statistical analyses (e.g.Mixed models, Bayesian disease modelling) and/or machine learning would be advantageous.
  • Experience with popular data science programming languages (e.g., R, Python, SQL) and/or a range of statistical/GIS software packages (e.g. Stata, QGIS)
  • Proven ability to work in teams, including interdisciplinary teams with others from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Able to and passionate about the development of new work areas with team collaboration
  • Enjoy and able to problem-solve with a keen attention to detail
  • Flexible and adaptable, along with willingness and ability to learn new topics/skills
  • Creative and resourceful in tackling challenges
  • You are comfortable collaborating with and communicating to people with a wide range of people, ranging from scientists from different disciplines to the general public
