Position Overview & Specifications

The University of Reading is setting up a new dedicated team of Wardens who have the overall responsibility for the pastoral support and discipline of students living within the University’s halls of residence.


We are looking for five part time (0.78 FTE) individuals who will proactively support our students whilst they live away from home undertaking their study at the University. Our Wardens will need to be able to listen and communicate effectively, have empathy and understanding of student life and the difficulties students face, whilst maintaining professional boundaries. We are also looking for individuals who can impartially investigate and enforce the Regulations for Student Conduct and the University’s Student Disciplinary process when appropriate.

Wardens will be required to support students with issues such as conflicts, noise complaints, addictions as well as any mental health issues students experience. The team will work closely with other University support teams and external professionals. #Never OK is a joint University of Reading and Reading University Students' Union (RUSU) campaign, standing against negative behaviours including abuse, bullying, discrimination, harassment, hate crime, racism and violence of any kind including sexual violence. Wardens will be required to proactively support students and ensure they have a safe and fulfilling environment whilst they study at the University. This may include activities such as investigating allegations of misconduct and taking appropriate action or escalating to a separate Serious Misconduct process if appropriate..

Wardens will operate a 24/7, 365 rota providing ‘in the moment’ support to our students living in halls of residence. The University Security team provide the initial contact over the night time period and will call out the duty Warden as and when required. Wardens will assist in the supervision of Hall Mentors - 20 Post Graduate students employed to provide pastoral support to student living in halls of residence.Together the team provide weekly social events for students promoting student wellbeing and inclusivity.

The posts are required to start on 4th September 2023, training will be provided and applicants must be available to undertake this training between 4th and 15th September 2023.

Wardens will be required to live on campus, therefore in addition to salary, Wardens will be given free accommodation (minimum 2 bedrooms) with no utility costs or council tax charges to pay. The accommodation will be liable for ‘benefit in kind’ tax which the Warden will be responsible for.
